What is
MALE CIRCUMCISION
Circumcision is a simple procedure in which the foreskin that covers the head of the penis is removed.
The Elna Sexual Wellness Center offers circumcision for adult men.
Though traditionally associated with newborns, circumcision can be performed on men of any age. Some men choose circumcision based on religious or cultural beliefs, while for others, circumcision is a solution to health conditions (such as phimosis and paraphimosis) or cosmetic concerns.
Although circumcision is ultimately a personal choice, research shows that there are significant health benefits to the procedure. Foreskin can trap bacteria and other infectious agents; its removal may improve genital hygiene and reduce risk of disease over a lifetime.

Benefits of
Male Circumcision
Circumcision can have positive health outcomes through the various stages of life.
- Improved hygiene: The incidence of balanitis is twice as high as those who are uncircumcised.
- Reduced risk of urinary tract and bladder infections: Studies suggest an over 10-fold decrease in risk of urinary tract infection in circumcised infants.
- Reduced risk of phimosis: Circumcision eliminates the risk of phimosis, which affects 1 in 10 older boys and men.
- Reduced risk of penile cancer: Studies have shown a significant reduction in the risk of invasive penile cancer. Invasive penile carcinoma is highly associated with a history of phimosis.
- Reduced risk of prostate cancer: Uncircumcised men have a higher incidence of prostate cancer.
- Reduced risk of HIV/AIDS: This is because the HIV virus enters through the inner lining of the foreskin which is thin and vulnerable.
- Reduced cervical cancer in women: The human papillomavirus can adhere to foreskin. Circumcision reduces risk of cervical cancer in a female partner by 5.6 times.

The Circumcision Treatment Process
Our experienced doctors perform the procedure using a technique developed by Dr. Neil Pollock, using a Mogen clamp, instead of a Gomco clamp or Plastibell ring. With this technique, the circumcision takes usually less than 10 minutes for adults.
The combination of local anesthetic, quick surgical technique, and use of skin glue instead of sutures improves cosmetic outcomes significantly.

AM I TOO OLD TO GET CIRCUMCISED?
No. Men of all ages have the surgery in our adult circumcision clinic. The most common age range for adult circumcision is 18 – 40 years old, but the procedure is regularly performed on a larger age range as requested for medical and personal reasons. The medical team at our clinic are experts at circumcising men of all ages.

We perform circumcision under long-acting local anesthesia and those men who have undergone this procedure usually describe it as virtually painless.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF THE PROCEDURE?
As with any medical procedure, circumcision carries some risks but serious complications are extremely rare.
- Bleeding: in 1 in 500 circumcisions there may be some bleeding that is usually stopped with pressure or less commonly with stitches. If a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia, then our doctors will need advice from a pediatric hematologist prior to proceeding.
- Infection: there is always a possibility that there could be a generalized infection requiring antibiotics after the surgery (1/4000).
- Serious infections are rare (1/5000).
- Concealed penis: when there is a good amount of fat around the penis (pubic fat), the penis may retract inward and increase the chances the penis gets partially buried and requiring medical intervention (1/800).
- Meatal stenosis: this is a narrowing of the urethra that may occur after the procedure requiring medical intervention (1/1000).
- Trauma: resulting in permanent damage to the head of the penis (never in our practice)
- Suboptimal cosmetic result (1/500)

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER?

WHEN CAN I RESUME PHYSICAL ACTIVITY?
Avoid strenuous activities such as bicycle riding, jogging, weight lifting, or aerobic exercise for 4 weeks or until your doctor says it is okay. You can return to normal activities, including driving, when you are comfortable doing them.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENTCOUNSELLING
Mental and emotional health can be key factors in sexual wellness. Stress, anxiety or depression can impact libido, and a man or woman’s ability to engage with their partner. Seeking assistance from a mental health professional may help alleviate the underlying causes of the condition. The Elna Sexual Wellness Center offers sex therapy services.
P-SHOT Injections THERAPY
The use of a man’s own blood factors to boost sexual response carries no heart-related risks. The injection floods the penis with regeneration cells that immediately begin revitalizing muscle, tissue and nerves.
The therapy is non-invasive, with no side effects.
MEN’S SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
Erectile dysfunction can be treated with low intensity shockwaves that open constricted blood vessels in the penis. The treatment restores the blood flow that allows for spontaneous erection upon arousal, with no drugs or side effects. Shockwave therapy is now available for ED.
FRENULECTOMY
Some men experience pain due to a tight band of skin between the shaft of the penis and the glans on the underside of the penis. It can cause pain with erections or bleeding during sex due to micro-trauma. A frenulectomy is a specialized technique that treats this condition, allowing increased penile skin range of motion and sexual enjoyment.
